I’m going to finally upgrade to a flatscreen for my bedroom within the next month, in preparation for my Xbox One. I’ll shop around for myself, obviously, but I figured I’d ask here for any advice. Here’s what I’m looking for, in no particular order. Everything is negotiable, but I want the best bang for my buck.
1) Preferably, it should cost under $300. Ideally, somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-200. It’s solely for video games, so I don’t need any special features or anything.
2) It should be no less than, say, 30” but preferably closer to 40-something. Anything more than 50 won’t fit on my stand easily, but if you can find that in my price range, I’ll gladly consider it.
3) It should have good speakers built in. I’m not interested in buying a separate set.
4) Finally, it should last long. I know there are drawbacks to every type of flatscreen, so I want whichever kind is going to get me all the way to the next generation of consoles at the very least. Keep in mind it’ll only be used between 3-8 hours a week, generally.
Thanks in advance!

Check your local craigslist. Always people selling them for cheap.

There’s a lifehacker post on this right now (nominations, at least).
Vizio or Sceptre are my recommendations.

I’m currently using a 32” Sharp with my One. Not terribly loud built-in speakers, but not that shitty. I’ve had it for about 10 months, no breaks or gremlins, very good color and picture. I don’t remember what I paid for it, but wasn’t much over $200, and that was, like I said, ten months ago.

I think your criteria match most LCD TVs these days. We have two, a Panasonic and a Vizio. Vizio is considered a second-tier brand, but I have heard nothing but good things about them, and have been very satisfied with mine. The speakers seem optimized for TV playback, and they sound good. If you have a Costco membership, check them out. They’ve got good prices, and their return policy is ridiculously liberal. Just make sure your TV has enough HDMI ports to make you happy.

Go check out whatever is on the Slickdeals main page right now. Sub-$300 TVs up to 42” are pretty common now, and some are half-decent. If you’re worried about longevity, buy from Costco or use Discover card (or some others). At least that way you get a 2-year warranty on it.
That price and size range, most TVs are sort of commodities now. They’re all pretty good, and they’re all pretty disposable.
My main house TV is a 37” Insignia from Best Buy, been going strong for 4 years now. It’s got an LG panel, but the rest of it is pretty generic. No complaints, but I’m no videophile. 3-5 hours a day of usage without a technical problem at all.

For purely video gaming I’d normally recommend a monitor/dumb display over a TV, but you need speakers so that’s out.
You’re going to want something with the least amount of delay. All the post-processing/image-correction stuff you should just ignore since you’re going to want it all off. The tier one brands will usually have a ‘gaming mode’ which will take care of this for you, otherwise you’ll be stuck trying to disable them all manually which, a lot like with car nannies, is not always possible. Delay is killer, especially in rhythm, tough platforming, or twitch style games. You're also going to want it to fully display pixel-by-pixel in native resolutions...a lot of cheap TVs have undefeatable overscan which will cause you to lose pieces of the HUD or cause blurring in small, precise text.
For brands, I’ve had great luck with Samsungs (been using them since CRT times). Tried some cheapo Vizio and Westinghouses for an ancillary room but just ended up returning them (dead pixels on the Vizio...the Westinghouse was just junk).

Word of advice: don’t go for an in-house brand like Insignia. They’re inexpensive, but not great.

flat screens pretty much universally have garbage speakers, but you can pic up 2.1 computer speakers that don’t suck for 20$ and just plug them into the headphone jack, just check if the headphone volume changes with the remote otherwise it is somewhat inconvenient.

Can’t speak to the cheap TV question, but if you’re going Xbone and doing multiplayer or shooters look at the Xbone stereo headphones. The sound is good, they are probably the cheapest option, they are powered by the controller battery so you’re not eating more batteries and they come with the controller adapter for something like $60-70. I’ve got a set and they are excellent. For playing games like COD or other shooters they do a much better job of giving directional information than the TV speaker will ever be able to unless you’re hooking up a full on surround system. Having the controls on the controller seemed weird at first, but after about 5 minutes it makes a lot more sense than having buttons and volume knobs on the headphones themselves.
